Nicolas W. Shammas,
MD, MS, EJD, FACC,FSCAI, FICA, FSVM

Dr. Shammas received his combined Master of Science-Doctor of Medicine (MS-MD) degrees at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.  He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY in 1994. He returned to the University of Iowa, Division of Cardiology where he was a Fellow Associate in Interventional Cardiology.   


Dr. Shammas has been heavily involved in the research and development of new techniques and procedures and has gained numerous awards and recognition for such. He has published over 400 manuscripts, abstracts, books and book chapters.  In addition, he has been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on over 200 multi-center clinical trials and the primary investigator of over 40 investigator-initiated trials.  He has served on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals.  In 1997, he established the Coronary and Peripheral Vascular Research Program at Genesis Medical Center.   In 2002, he founded the Midwest Cardiovascular Research Foundation, an independent non-profit 501c3 public charitable organization, dedicated to cardiovascular research, preventative medicine and education.

 

Dr. Shammas has been involved in the education of health care providers and the public.  He has established and directed several conferences including Cardiovascular Interventions and Practice Guideline (CIPG), the annual conference of the Midwest Cardiovascular Research Foundation.  He has presented his research and lectured at national and international meetings including Central America, the Middle East, the Far East and Europe.  He was voted as the Preceptor Teacher of the Year in 2002 by the family practice residents at the Genesis Family Residency Training program.

 

Dr. Shammas is a coauthor on the cardiovascular chapter in the Rakel Texbook of Medicine, and author of the superficial venous disease chapter in the Endovascular Companion of Braunwald, both key references for family practice physicians and cardiologists respectively.  He is also the editor of three textbooks in endovascular medicine. Dr Shammas is an interventional cardiologist with Cardiovascular Medicine; an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; and Founder, President and Research Director of the Midwest Cardiovascular Research Foundation.

 

Dr. Shammas is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology by ABIM and in Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Medicine by SVM.   He is a Fellow of several societies including the American College of Cardiology, the International College of Angiology, the Society of Vascular Medicine and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.

 

Dr. Shammas is licensed in both Iowa and Illinois and has staff privileges at Genesis Medical Center and UnityPoint Health Trinity.
